<br />
<br />
The last few months of 2013 were especially hard for me.<br />
<br />
You would think a family vacation to Taiwan (the Motherland) for two weeks would be great. It was definitely enlightening in many ways but the trip really made me really depressed. I was already burnt out from doing show after show after show for months. But there is something profound about going to a beautiful tropical country and then realizing that it is wrought with environmental and social problems. The air pollution in the major cities were varying degrees of disgusting depending on weather and location. I found that mountainous and seaside cities had the most breathable air. Otherwise, you were inhaling cadmium-laced diesel air the more inland you are from the vast amounts of scooters that were being driven. I almost got ran over three times by said scooters. Driving laws are not reinforced and were as loose at the tunic shirts I brought over.<br />
<br />
The culture is quite similar but also very different. It sometimes did not feel different from Canada when you looked at Taiwan from a outside perspective. However, when it came to social values there was a distinct difference. I saw many abandoned pure-bred large sized dogs in the cities. It broke my heart. Dogs that would fetch thousands of dollars and imported from abroad were left to fend for themselves in city streets once they grew out of their cute puppy stage. In the countryside, large dogs were chained to front yards on 2m chains as 'guard dogs' but they were flea-ridden. I even stumbled on a dead starved dog in front of someone garage. The more isolated seaside areas are full of small packs of abandoned dogs. My family and I came on some puppies that were so full of fleas but at the same time so friendly. If I could take them home with me...I would. The biggest irony of this dog abandonment issue is that almost everyone had a Miniature red poodles who were clearly pampered and spoiled.<br />
<br />
At almost every major intersection in the bigger cities there were disabled, mentally-challenged, or disfigured individuals who would approach you selling state lottery tickets, gum, tissues, pens, candies, or flowers. My siblings and I would try to buy out as many of these vendors as we could once we discovered why this was their livelihood. Apparently, in Taiwan there is no equal employment laws or discrimination laws against people who are mentally or physically challenged. Nor are there laws against ageism, sexism, or minority discrimination in hiring practices like those found in Canada. It is said if you are in any way 'different' or if you are over 35 years-old it is unlikely you will find a job. These people who approached us mainly had disfigurements, missing limbs, or were mentally-challenged. They are given a state welfare but it barely covers their life needs and they have to resort to selling small things or begging to make ends meet.<br />
<br />
I basically discovered despite the natural beauty of the country I began to abhor it's callous regard for the environment and social values. It was even worst in China when I laid over twice. I have basically sworn off traveling to Asia for a long time. There is nothing in this world I hate more than feeling helpless and that was exactly what travelling to Taiwan did to me. I felt like I couldn't help anything or anyone. It didn't matter that I made more income than average Taiwanese adult. There was nothing long-term I could do for the things that made me upset. I would spend nights lying awake feeling a profound pain in myself over these things.<br />
<br />
I'm not saying Taiwan is the only country with problems. By all means, I recommend visiting any country at least once in your lifetime. Just these issues really latched themselves on to me. I grew up in Canada and I was raised to believe that a good society is one that promotes equality regardless of disabilities. I have always worked for companies that have equal employment practices and a history of charitable work. I don't believe people get "too old" for employment. That's bullshit.<br />

<b>Drumroll!</b></div>

<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>THE PERSEPHONE COLLECTION - My Spring and Summer color collection is now mostly out! (By mostly, meaning I still have to upload the hairchains, the bracelets, the long necklaces and rings - but the key collection is released!)</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Persephone Collection is my second officially released collection. Urban Nomad is my unofficial second collection (in creation terms) but it is SO BIG that I actually feel pretty intimidated to upload it all. I will do so in the coming months though as I have more time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It seems SO WEIRD to have jumped from Nocturna Collection to Persephone Collection when in reality I had A LOT of time to figure out transitioning away from monotones, to the exciting neutrals and duller colors of Urban Nomad, to where I am now with the Persephone Collection. This little technical gap bothers me and probably leaves my potential stockists' rubbing their heads. I'm sorry, guys!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had A LOT of fun playing with colors and rediscovering it. Personally, I have always been good at it due to a childhood background in watercolor painting. But, I gave it up a long time ago in favor of academics under extreme parental pressures (something I still regret to this day). But, to finally get to pick something like contrasting and complimenting colors was quite fun. The results are unconventional (for me personally) and the style is refreshingly modern with a slight nouveux-tribal-meets-luxe-boho kind of aesthetic. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>I have posted the collection on my <a href="http://www.covensk.etsy.com/" target="_blank">COVEN ETSY</a> and everything has FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING. Also, there is a SALE of 10% the whole shop if you use PERSEPHONE10 when you check out. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You may be asking why I decided to go with FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING no matter what. Honestly, as a customer I am an avid online shopper. But, I hate adding things to my shopping cart then later seeing the shipping costs...it's discouraging and a little annoying sometimes. I've adopted a policy to just to incur most of the shipping costs myself to save my customers from that same issue. Yeah, it annoys me THAT much. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyways, no more shop talk. Go look at the collection below!</div>

I recently had to do a photography assignment for one of my university classes.<br />
<br />
I think I am still terrible at photography and I think it might be that I still don't really know how to use my camera (or it's not awesome enough). At least the class has made me realize that there are a lot more technical aspects to it then I think.<br />
<br />
It was based on a phrase and your interpretation of it.<br />
<br />
Well, then, I was told not to translate it too literally...but I took it in a literal direction. I'm very uncreative when it comes to stuff like this. Ask me to make something beautiful physically - and I will. Ask me to photograph something? I hit a wall.<br />
<br />
Without further ado here is the phrase I chose:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0TvdoPXPzub0Ks3E2VWYvSCGH3bUEvLSsGaGoOaKg1BAOUBGnV_ilbxUMI8iMOtjRTNYhkt7G_yFzbQYwY9pbM5wO_9Txui9mNvO7R6ONID8af_4EmC9OlZktYDlTD58ex82bJviS1LMo/s1600/IMG_0093.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0TvdoPXPzub0Ks3E2VWYvSCGH3bUEvLSsGaGoOaKg1BAOUBGnV_ilbxUMI8iMOtjRTNYhkt7G_yFzbQYwY9pbM5wO_9Txui9mNvO7R6ONID8af_4EmC9OlZktYDlTD58ex82bJviS1LMo/s640/IMG_0093.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It is something that conveys in my mind the best situation for me. I could have chosen more inspirational or provocative phrases but I liked how it stood for me as what I aspire to. I definitely could have manually focused this picture better. Sigh. I can't tell on the TINY LCD flip screen.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghH1QpCqQH1D8vFImxHFDCbCGcudznnOdxfOcIahtQevtbu1LwItPclIDZDaMBX3evi95Q9JQMSW61QzmnB3Cm7gVGY488v2lfkC-6DrcyZo7BEBZWG3taD14NX4hUuBGwpwhB1m4Q70zF/s1600/IMG_0086.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghH1QpCqQH1D8vFImxHFDCbCGcudznnOdxfOcIahtQevtbu1LwItPclIDZDaMBX3evi95Q9JQMSW61QzmnB3Cm7gVGY488v2lfkC-6DrcyZo7BEBZWG3taD14NX4hUuBGwpwhB1m4Q70zF/s640/IMG_0086.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">One of things about what you like/love is that it is in a literal sense freedom. For me, it's the freedom to wake up really late. YESSSSS... 11:30 - 1 pm wake-up time as depicted in this picture of my view from my studio. It overlooks Liberty Village a tad and I always see the lake on a good day. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"> </span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_SCj7l3HStb6_gsohJQKBTemoy9PGRIs-J-D28-cXDwXH3kO0QTxrkfbAmEihLUkURzwCZLhbZj3A2yo-7gGB6_SKkS7vafVkRXo5l_xAz2qi2D3BNVWDFoSewKwnSz0WjP3YCpORfnBL/s1600/IMG_0105.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_SCj7l3HStb6_gsohJQKBTemoy9PGRIs-J-D28-cXDwXH3kO0QTxrkfbAmEihLUkURzwCZLhbZj3A2yo-7gGB6_SKkS7vafVkRXo5l_xAz2qi2D3BNVWDFoSewKwnSz0WjP3YCpORfnBL/s640/IMG_0105.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What makes me happy? THIS. This is only around 20% of my studio but this area is where I work almost everyday. Normally, it doesn't look so clean. Under the table is where my more heavy supplies: Italian chain, boxes and boxes of gems, silks, lace, and other notions hide. I like to think I am organized...but let's be honest this is obviously a depiction of a <u>borderline hoarder</u>. See how I gave up even labeling the little drawers?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGtG3NAVw7BiQ0ohFiUfFgzQYkznPKQsv39g-i5vLPhNyzRaRb385Tn1yvQjAH0SmjOkMZRdGCe8JZP02mZoQgG-bYml0GbwikFN3A2MJ49ZaK6VsIkpml8abBlGtSSxLj-OqUaNoYuVZJ/s1600/Design.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGtG3NAVw7BiQ0ohFiUfFgzQYkznPKQsv39g-i5vLPhNyzRaRb385Tn1yvQjAH0SmjOkMZRdGCe8JZP02mZoQgG-bYml0GbwikFN3A2MJ49ZaK6VsIkpml8abBlGtSSxLj-OqUaNoYuVZJ/s640/Design.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Designing is also a form of happiness and freedom for the partially self-employed (like myself). The freedom of designing what you want without consequences or supervision. Here's my obviously staged attempt to figure out one of my leather, boxchain, and pearl designs. One of my more recent pieces is a leather wrapped skull. I'm putting it on a clutch but a lack of an industrial sewing machine puts a huge block on that project. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKRlPCLUlFrqlwR0wBLDswoMpTC0kpgN7WiiM24JdYSKpEeQ2vV9vb_c9TlBsyBAu3wvaOronHx_spi7B0kzYxvTOadU5rHm49CF3oE4d3zqzqbDVSNq0uMu1d0KOGxE5hRdR9QQVk7zNR/s1600/IMG_0106.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKRlPCLUlFrqlwR0wBLDswoMpTC0kpgN7WiiM24JdYSKpEeQ2vV9vb_c9TlBsyBAu3wvaOronHx_spi7B0kzYxvTOadU5rHm49CF3oE4d3zqzqbDVSNq0uMu1d0KOGxE5hRdR9QQVk7zNR/s640/IMG_0106.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I ordered replacement tubes for the vintage metalled acrylic I had used the first time around. The angle was totally wrong. So, I made long necklaces since the angle of the tubes gave a pleasant 'U' shape. Here's a sketch of my first piece, then the prototype, and now laying out the next versions of the long necklace. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM1SRXilRSbRV5hac6v5RzJjQD1AlSC0yAELnX4-jfcD3u4fYX9_5xZFVUxs0LbjFb1UtjKi6F8dfl4I0c2yCG8D9-3mPJ9fm0Tt9lh-RzupfX7q7sYoTJTa_UtDS1e8gPviv9Y0ETVsgY/s1600/IMG_0109.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM1SRXilRSbRV5hac6v5RzJjQD1AlSC0yAELnX4-jfcD3u4fYX9_5xZFVUxs0LbjFb1UtjKi6F8dfl4I0c2yCG8D9-3mPJ9fm0Tt9lh-RzupfX7q7sYoTJTa_UtDS1e8gPviv9Y0ETVsgY/s640/IMG_0109.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Beading process. A close-up. Look at that gorgeous centerpiece of the necklace! It's a rainbow quartz. I call this one the peacock rainbow quartz and it's a weird powdery blue with iridescent shine. So pretty!<br />
<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I end this post with one of my most recent publications from COCO Magazine's April issue which you can see <a href="http://issuu.com/cocomagazine/docs/cocopart3april" target="_blank">HERE</a>. The necklace is the same one on the model in the editorial. It's actually the second piece I made for the Persephone Collection.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The team that did the shoot got the cover of the magazine which is exciting. One of my pieces is actually on the cover but you can't see it (except for the chain portion). Still pretty pleased with the results though. I started out pretty avant-garde goth with my designs and playing with colors nowadays has really been an adventure! </div>

<br /></div>
Wow, I haven't updated since last year!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A lot of thing happened since. I have been immensely busy with school, work, and COVEN. Things have died down for Quaintrella because personally my personal fashion evolved a bit to be more on the minimalist avant-garde goth side. Got lots of press recently which is great. You can check out the 2013 Press <a href="http://www.covensk.com/press-2013" target="_blank">HERE</a>. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Perhaps, the most exciting thing that has happened is that I sponsored INNA Clothing last minute for Ottawa Fashion Week this pass February. Special thanks to my favourite stylist, Tasha Farrington for setting it all up! INNA Clothing closed their show with a model wearing one of their most dramatic pieces and my Urban Nomad Collection necklace called The Lion's Mane. It's such a dramtic piece and so perfect for this dress: </div>

The necklace is extremely architectural and I made it out of findings and beads I bought with no idea what to use them for. What I like most about it is that it closes with 2 feet of leather ribbon with two twin gold spikes that hold it to the huge Italian brass boxchain. When tied in double-knots and worn the leather sways very much like a twin tails. </div>

The Bazaar of the Bizarre was pretty awesome for my last show of the year. My friends, Dylan of DylaniumKnits, Emily of WOUDENBERG, and Chu + Cindy of Morico were selling there with me!</div>

It gave me a chance to showcase some of my newer pieces. For example, these are my upcycled leather necklaces (that I just dropped off to Hells Belles at Queen- Spadina!). They come in a number of shapes, sizes, and leathers. The focus of these pieces is minimalism, geometry, simplicity, and impact. Here are half-circle pieces and ALL printed ones are totally reversible for TWO looks in ONE necklace. Nifty.</div>

I am terrible at blogging consistently.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well, anything that is not micro-blogging. You can find me on Twitter ranting under <a href="http://www.twitter.com/Quaintrella" target="_blank">@Quaintrella</a> or for strictly business <a href="http://www.twitter.com/covensk" target="_blank">@CovenSK</a>. For the more visually stimulated I update my <a href="http://instagram.com/quaintrella" target="_blank">Instagram</a> quite often. If you don't mind headshots of my new hairstyle follow me there. Always updating with my newest prototype pieces that I have made before doing the math to see if it's financially and supply feasible. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm currently in a dreadful exam week...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, great news! Many of those close to me know that I don't do many art of craft shows. I do conventions strictly for business because the amount of money I can pull in makes me weep at how hard I work at my part-time job. I've overcome my fear of publicly selling in the past couple of years and I am a completely different person at giant conventions. I love how fast-paced, energized, and frantic it can be. I also love seeing people in cosplay and superhero costumes. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But art show and craft shows are at a slower pace. It's almost intimidating for me...but I am doing the Bazaar of the Bizarre on December 15th and my fellow jewelry and clothing designer friend, Emily Woudenberg, of <a href="http://www.emilywoudenberg.com/" target="_blank">WOUDENBERG</a> will be there also! Details in the picture below! I hope you guys can come out and check it out! I will have TONNNNS of new jewelry for both guys and girls!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5b-A4DxO_3mJv-qsfPRP-wsaU0xqwNiWCKmgYZl-XvOvySLeHO52-uxKCGCzc97qzZjHsu2SKCYFnMLYZ0JGB9qZEP5m24g_fOyk_j3F4NKUgajLkv0GTQhK_ts9VXldEYztNLYVQsf-g/s1600/tumblr_mdhpgrqWM61qgj41so1_1280.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5b-A4DxO_3mJv-qsfPRP-wsaU0xqwNiWCKmgYZl-XvOvySLeHO52-uxKCGCzc97qzZjHsu2SKCYFnMLYZ0JGB9qZEP5m24g_fOyk_j3F4NKUgajLkv0GTQhK_ts9VXldEYztNLYVQsf-g/s640/tumblr_mdhpgrqWM61qgj41so1_1280.jpg" width="451" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In other news. I'm going to be graduating in 1.5 years time. But, you know what living so far has taught me? THIS...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhluEVWhLkAjHtuxRFD3OBRn3wb1cn8UWtBSE5x1CKj2hLwRWzY5HUErsQwtTY0Z69OM7j680ZQiVkYMCai23KXf-EPPmpMkZnhAcKswLzKDI66-hdNu9cOmL6wkHWcgpNNMg9OhhqWriLy/s1600/c7ef49401f3411e28fa722000a1fbcea_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhluEVWhLkAjHtuxRFD3OBRn3wb1cn8UWtBSE5x1CKj2hLwRWzY5HUErsQwtTY0Z69OM7j680ZQiVkYMCai23KXf-EPPmpMkZnhAcKswLzKDI66-hdNu9cOmL6wkHWcgpNNMg9OhhqWriLy/s400/c7ef49401f3411e28fa722000a1fbcea_7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I won't be using my degree much. I'm going the entrepreneurial route. I'm not sure if I can take a 9-5 route working for someone else in an office or cubicle. That's what my degree would give me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That sad thought aside, I bought some cat hats. The story is that I went to the One of A Kind Show - Christmas Edition last week. It was AH-MAZING! So much variety I just got lost and the food section was so delectable! Unfortunately, I bought nothing but food stuff. You would think I would be throwing my money at all the local designers. Nope, I have gotten a LOT better at controlling my clothing urges. For jewelry I only buy it if it's simply cheaper to buy then make myself OR if I can't make it. It really curbs my spending habits a lot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
However, I fell for those GORGEOUS cat hat by Lilliput Hats. It was like a Cat bandit hat with eyeholes and a piece of wool felt that was shaped like two triangles for ears. But, it came at a price tag of $150 which is beyond my personal budget for hats. I'm all for supporting local but one has to know where to draw the personal line. I'm currently saving for Trippen shoes from Germany so it would mean a dent in my goal. However, a little online search yielded cat hats! I bought the two following ones below. So cute. I can't wait to get them in the mail.</div>

<br />
I have been really busy the past few months. I just ended my internship with Jenny Bird and started full-time University today (which I did not attend because I am deathly sick). One of the highlights of the past month was that I was published in the August-September issue of Auxiliary Magazine alongside a number of my fashion designer friends and acquaintances. Notably: Nordem Hirst by my friend, <a href="http://www.nordemhirst.com/" target="_blank">Kallvis</a>, Dylan of <a href="http://www.dylaniumknits.com/" target="_blank">DylaniumKnits</a>, <a href="http://www.wesmisener.com/" target="_blank">WES MiSENER</a>, and <a href="http://www.handsomeandlace.ca/" target="_blank">Handsome & Lace</a>. We are all local Toronto designers and it feels great to be featured all together so cohesively. Special thanks to Stylist and Auxiliary Fashion Editor, Tasha Farrington for pulling me for this gorgeous editorial. You can view the entire digital edition of the issue <a href="http://auxiliarymagazine.com/news/2012/08/augustseptember-2012-issue-out-now/" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
That aside, I have been really sick again. My time seems to be segmented by my lack of an immune system. I have a terrible summer cold. WHO gets a damn summer cold twice? Apparently, me. It makes me worried how winter will be panning out for me.<br />
<br />
My COVEN Fall-Winter 2012 Collection will be up in approximately ONE AND A HALF TO TWO WEEKS. Mark you calendars, because it screams UNISEX pieces, death, and leather. I really love love this collection. It represents entirely where I am in my personal fashion right now. I won't lie. I have been buying so many leather pieces for myself the coming months to prepare for a dreary Fall-Winter time at University.<br />
<br />
Wonder what you are in for? Take a peek at some of the Collection! And, most pieces also come in white.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Forgoing some of my signature taxidermy accents I decided to challenge myself to use a lot of the supplies I had lying around that weren’t bird skulls. This was the result. I have a few more pieces but I’m waiting for the Edge Kote on the leather to dry properly before I add more embellishments. I posted this on Facebook and out of everything I had recently made this got the most attention. I can see why - it’s modern, edgy, and a little different. I have been really attracted to asymmetry lately because there’s something about unbalance and imperfection that just draws me in. This is a concept used by Japanese potters who believe imperfections are what makes their art human. This piece is a bit of a One-of-a-kind piece. But, I think I will replicate the asymmetry again but with a different look.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My supplier is currently still casting them and I hope to at least get the bird skulls by next week. I’m excited because this will be the first time seeing bone and black colored skulls in what I believe is a different type of resin. If the quality of the resin is what I like then I will soon start getting my larger skulls casted in small quantities for Bird Skull Clutch production which I am slating for the end of March to beginning of April. Testing has been good so far but I should really make a couple more clutches before I feel confident enough to sell. I have a waiting list of 5 people really really want the clutch. I have their color schemes, too. Hahaha. One customer, a man, wants colbalt blue leather. Awesome. </div><br />

I’ve always been the type of person who is careful and tries to plan ahead. I’m impulsive but with business I always try to put a little more thought into my actions. On loose leaf paper, the business plan is at least 35 pages long and covers everything from going local within Canada and the US to establishing myself in a more international market. I have a German contact, a French-UK contact, a probable Japanese contact… I’m still looking at the economical news on the Euro situation before I make a move. I plan to at least establish a FW2012 Lookbook to make my advance as easy as possible. I’m lucky, to have made so many friends in the fashion industry because it has helped me see how I can do this more professionally to the standard within the industry. :)</div><br />

</tbody></table><br />
Yesterday, was Valentine’s Day and it is always a kind of third Christmas for me.<br />
<br />
I won’t elaborate beyond the fact that I am an individual who is well loved. :) I’m grateful that I will always have my support systems in place. Be it my significant other, family, or friends. I love you all. Thank you, for being there for me and supporting me. Valentine’s Day always reminds me of just that. Not the lovers, haters, or being single…just that there needs to be more love in this world. A very sentimental blog post for my new brand. Hahaha. I know.<br />
<br />
In other news, yesterday I was on my way to meet the stylist, <a href="http://www.wix.com/prettydeadlystylz/prettydeadlystylz" target="_blank">Tasha Farrington</a> of Pretty Deadly Stylz who had borrowed my COVEN by Sonia Kang items for a Menswear photoshoot. Funny story, I also slipped on a giant dog turd on my way to meet her… I did not fall so that was good. But my poor shoes will need a good cleaning. :(<br />
<br />
The positive thing was that the photoshoot turned out quite well according to Tasha. The team I heard was great and to be honest I was so relieved that she chose my items. She’s so awesome and she’s worked with a lot of my friends notably <a href="http://www.kallvisgents.com/" target="_blank">Kallvis Gents</a> and <a href="http://www.verucacyn.com/" target="_blank">Veruca Cyn</a> (among others). They have all highly recommended her and having finally met her I can see why. I’m so new to this whole process and I’m glad that the first stylist I have ever worked with was so rad AND professional. I’m also grateful that this photoshoot was for Menswear and I hope that it will be an official magazine editorial. Time will tell. I can’t wait to see the results!<br />
<br />
I have another photoshoot in a few months but I believe this will be for Womenswear. I’m also looking to prepare at least two Lookbooks in a few months for both <a href="http://www.quaintrella.com/" target="_blank">Quaintrella</a>’s Bridal Collection and COVEN by Sonia Kang’s FW2012. Normally, in the fashion industry I would be launching FW2012 now but I usually work with small stockists boutiques not department stores so the timelines are not as advanced.<br />
<br />
Oh, before I forget! I would like to congratulate my designer friend, <a href="http://www.verucacyn.com/" target="_blank">Veruca Cyn</a> for getting published in February’s Issue of Ellements Magazine!!! <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Veruca and Me - Picture: Iris of Blackiris Design</td></tr>
</tbody></table> I have been very sick for the past few weeks. It was a combination of medical issues and the flu which to be honest has been one of the LONGEST colds I have ever experienced in my life. I couldn’t walk for a few days because I felt so weak and I couldn’t go to classes or work. Even when I felt slightly better because constant nosebleeds kept me home. Imagine having 4 nosebleeds a day triggered by a mere sneeze. Not pretty.<br />
<br />
However, the recent days have proven to be fruitful in playing creative catch-up. I had the opportunity to meet up with friends after being so sick. I actually have a funny story. <a href="http://www.blackirisdesign.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Iris of Blackiris Design</a> and <a href="http://www.verucacyn.com/" target="_blank">Veruca Cyn</a> were shopping on Queen Street this pass Saturday for supplies and new materials. We bumped into Veruca’s old friends and one of them is the manager of a store in Yorkdale Mall and she bought my mermaid half-circlet headpiece right off my head while shopping. This is something that has NEVER happened to me. Hahaha.<br />
<br />
But, it looked amazing on her hijab and also opened my eyes to an under-appreciated market here in the West. One catering to Muslim girls who wear hijabs. Normally, they use plain pins or safety pins to fasten their hijabs to their heads but what if they had the option to use a more elaborate contraption that included clips and chains in the back? Crazy - right? But, there’s an idea that I might be working with that has a lot of potential because I have had Muslim girl friends who have complained before the lack of ornament to the pins they used - but it never occurred to me until a Muslim girl bought my headpiece right off my head that there was a potential.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Quaintrella Mermaid Half-Circlet Headpiece (SOLD)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>I will definitely be making <b>COVEN by Sonia Kang</b> pieces of the half-circlet which will include more intricate and a slightly morbid aesthetic. Lately, I have been drawn to the potential shaping of leather for the half-circlets. We shall see - it is my first time working with leather. People have a tendency never to believe me when I say this. I’m very intuitive with what I do and I can generally make what I do look like I’ve been doing this for years. :)<br />
<br />
My upcoming FW2012 Collection is very edgy. There will be a lot of leather, chains, detailing, and of course use of taxidermy castings.<br />

For example, bits and pieces of that fishbone chain and handmade chainmail. There will be studs but I will refrain from using too many pyramid shaped ones because I feel like they have been much too trendy for the past couple of years.<br />

The more decorative pieces on top are my friend, <a href="http://www.blackirisdesign.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Iris</a>’s picks and the more neutral pieces are the base colors of what I will be making most of the bird skull clutches from. I prefer more expensive and higher quality leathers that have a good thickness. I also prefer more evident texture in the leather. One of those pieces is a brown nuback leather (which is sanded and buffed on the outer side of the leather and sometimes even oiled) - it feels like suede but has better durability, wear-and-tear, more expensive, and in my opinion is a lot more luxurious. I have wedges in nuback leather and I love the texture. </div><div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />

This piece was found at a ridiculously wonderful price and was also a perfect shape for Veruca’s critique of my first bird skull clutch. She had said it would look more stunning at a longer length so that the skull stood out more. My take on it is seen to the left with a black bird skull. I’d have to make the flap a more complimentary triangle shape for the skull to stand out more - but I think this combination would look stunning especially with a thick accent chain.<br />

Another thing I found a few days after was this AMAZINGLY similar nuback leather with the same metallic paint finish but in the colors of a GALAXY. To the left is a picture of how amazing it looks! The colors are so iridescent in the right light and though it broke my budget and cost an arm I bought it. I will definitely have fun making a couple clutches out of this piece.<br />
<br />
I am hoping that once I have made at least two clutches our of this piece I will have enough for a couple small complimentary matching pouches that use smaller bird skulls and finer chain as accents. Oh, the possibilities!<br />

I know elastic harnesses have been a underground trend for the past two years but I found the most amazing spinal cord chain and thought that it would make an amazing elastic harness statement piece. I was right. It looks edgy but wearable. LOVE IT.<br />

But, it is a New Year’s Resolution of mine to try to take more outfit shots! I had actually just dyed my hair my synthetic red. I actually bought out the stock of this red at Pacific Mall when Palty (Japanese hair dye company) announced they were discontinuing it. So, that is the last of my synthetic red shade until I get another Japanese brand or find more of this color. So sad.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<br />
I love nothing more then seeing women in catsuits in movies. Kate Beckinsale in PVC is no exception. I loved the movie and am so happy Michael and Selene have a child together. I hate how so many stereotypical fantasy-horror movie genres make vampires dead soulless sterile beings. Life would be so much more beautiful if they could have children with each other (or so the sappy romantic in me would like to think). Then again, there are probably a few sick vampires out there who would abuse this biological advantage. But, let’s not get into the technicalities. :) I definitely think the plot has been getting better as every movie is made in the Underworld series. I really wish I watched it in 3D now.<br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Another update with my COVEN by Sonia Kang line is that I have finally sewn chain on to the bird skull clutch. It looks amazing. So far, I have a waiting list of at least 5 orders (1 overseas) for the clutch and I have been recommended a couple boutiques to approach in Yorkville once I start production of it after all the testing and refining. Exciting news! I have also started a sample product that I made from scrap leather from the bird skull clutch. I braided the leather and made a really really cool studded headband (I’m wearing it in my outfit shot) which I want to sell very soon after I make a few more tweaks to it. <b>What do you guys think about my new direction and re-branding?</b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Also, I feel like since re-branding COVEN by Sonia Kang I feel like I should add more black in my wardrobe. I spent two years removing it from my wardrobe and now I want to go back. The irony. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
